La Coupe d’Afrique des Nations 2023 entre dans son dernier carré en Côte d’Ivoire. « Miraculeux, Revenant », c’est l’adjectif et le nom qui déterminent l’équipe de Côte d’Ivoire depuis son repêchage en huitièmes de finale grâce à la victoire du Maroc contre la Zambie lors de la dernière journée des phases de groupes. Battus par le Nigeria 1-0, avant d’être humiliés par la Guinée Équatoriale dans le groupe A, les Éléphants n’étaient plus attendus dans la suite de la compétition qu’ils organisent. Mais leur rachat en tant que meilleur 3è qui leur a valu le chambrage « On vaut rien, mais on est qualifié », aura tout changé au soir du 24 janvier 2024.
Les revenants refusent de repartir dans leur tombe
C’est un autre visage de l’équipe ivoirienne qu’ont découvert les spectateurs depuis les 8ès de finale de la 34è édition de la CAN. Les Éléphants n’ont pas été les meilleurs producteurs de jeu dans les matchs qu’ils ont disputés, mais ils se sont montrés très combatifs. Contre le Sénégal qui a fait un sans faute en phase de groupes avec trois victoires sur trois, personne ne pouvait miser sur une Côte d’Ivoire matraquée et enfouie par la Guinée Équatoriale quelques jours plus tôt. Mais elle a affiché une une détermination bien qu’elle était menée jusqu’aux dernières minutes. Les Éléphants qui « ne valent rien, mais qualifiés », ont sorti le grand jeu pour renverser la tendance et contraindre les Champions en titre à la séance des tirs au but qui leur a été fatale. La Côte d’Ivoire s’envole en quarts de finale.
Face aux Aigles du Mali en quart de finale, la méfiance était de mise au regard de l’exploit ivoirien contre les Lions de la Teranga. Mais impossible de parier sur ces Éléphants face au costaud milieu de terrain malien. Cependant, la réalité a été toute autre sur le terrain malgré l’infériorité numérique des Ivoiriens depuis la 43è minute. Leur bloc compact et collectif impressionnant a rendu difficile la tâche aux Maliens qui n’ont pris l’avantage qu’à la 73è. Mais les « revenants » ivoiriens affranchis de toute peur de mourir à nouveau, ont une nouvelle fois prouvé qu’ils n’étaient pas prêts à repartir dans leur tombe. Égalisation en toute fin des 90 minutes et crucifixion du Mali au bout des prolongations. Là, ce n’était plus un coup de chance mais un coup de performance qui a assommé les Aigles dans les airs. Il n’en fallait pas plus aux Éléphants pour soigner leur image et se faire compter à nouveau parmi les prétendants au titre.
Forces et faiblesses des Éléphants
Les rachetés devenus fulgurants ont reconquis leur public en quelques jours seulement. Cependant comme susmentionné, les hommes d’Emerse Faé sont loin d’être ceux qui produisent le meilleur jeu dans la compétition. Malgré leurs performances XXL en huitièmes et en quarts de finale, les Ivoiriens font preuves d’insuffisance au niveau de leur défense et milieu de terrain. Les 7 buts encaissés jusque-là dont 5 en phase de groupes, témoignent de la perméabilité de cette défense ivoirienne. Le milieu n’est pas si défaillant mais il présente tout de même quelques signes de fragilité dans la récupération et distribution du ballon. Quant à l’attaque, elle manque d’un véritable tueur au vu de son incapacité à concrétiser certaines occasions. La force de l’équipe ivoirienne réside dans son imprévisibilité et son jeu collectif. Difficile donc de prévoir les réactions des Éléphants surtout qu’à chaque match apparaissent de nouvelles têtes qui font basculer la situation.
Seko Fofana remarquable, Haller attendu
Il va de soi que l’équipe ivoirienne ne repose pas sur une quelconque star. Elle doit ses prouesses au collectif qu’elle développe. Toutefois, certains joueurs se sont faits remarquer sur des détails près. Dans ce lot, Seko Fofana buteur et passeur décisif. Dans l’ensemble, l’attaquant ivoirien est impliqué dans trois des cinq buts marqués par son équipe depuis le début du tournoi. Sébastien Haller quant à lui, semble toujours attendu par son public malgré son apport considérable depuis ses débuts contre le Sénégal. Connu pour ses exploits et sa force de frappe, les Ivoiriens attendent de leur chouchou une énorme performance surtout à ce stade de la compétition.
