Parti à la Can malgré son état, il avait reçu le feu-vert du staff médical du club espagnol pour ne disputer ses premières minutes qu’à partir des quarts de finale. Le Sénégal s’est arrêté en huitième face au pays hôte la Côte d’Ivoire, et donc Youssouf Sabaly n’a grappillé aucune minute dans la compétition. Le joueur ne figure pas sur la liste UEFA Conférence de son club, et son entraîneur justifie ce choix par la volonté de le protéger sur le plan physique et sanitaire.
