La CAN 2023 a été le théâtre d’une aventure captivante pour les Lions de la Teranga, qui ont enthousiasmé les supporters du Sénégal en réalisant un sans-faute lors de la phase de poules. Cependant, le parcours prometteur des Champions d’Afrique en titre a été brutalement stoppé en huitièmes de finale par les Eléphants de la Côte d’Ivoire, lors d’une séance de tirs au but haletante, remportée 5 à 4 après un match nul 1-1 en prolongations.
Après cette élimination amère, le sélectionneur Aliou Cissé et ses joueurs ont reçu un message d’encouragement du plus haut niveau. Le président Macky Sall, sur son compte Twitter officiel, a exprimé sa solidarité envers l’équipe nationale. « Chers Lions, Vous et votre staff avez mes encouragements. Les penalties sont toujours aléatoires. Bon retour dans vos clubs respectifs et bonne chance pour vos échéances futures », a écrit le président Macky Sall.
