Cependant, les choses ne sont pas passées comme voulu face aux Ivoiriens en finale. « Notre équipe a fait une bonne compétition. Ce soir, on n’a pas montré notre meilleur jeu. La Côte d’Ivoire a été meilleure que nous », reconnaît José Peseiro. « Mes joueurs voulaient soulever ce trophée contre moi, mais nous n’avons pas pu réaliser ça. Je suis triste, l’équipe aussi. Dès fois, vous voulez bien faire, mais vous n’y arrivez pas », a tristement ajouté l’entraîneur des Super Eagles.
Revenant sur le déroulement du cette rencontre entre le Nigéria et la Côte d’Ivoire, le coach portugais a évoqué les raisons de la défaite du Nigéria. « Nous avons joué avec ce système, nous avions toujours été à l’aise. On a changé de stratégie après le second but de la Côte d’Ivoire. Notre équipe a exercé plus de pression. On a pris le second but parce que nous avons un peu relâché. C’est la raison de la défaite », a déclaré José Peseiro.
