Après eux, aucune sélection n’a réussi à conserver le titre. En 2012, la Zambie a remporté la CAN, mais a été éliminée dès la phase de groupe en 2013. Le Nigeria a fait pire, car après la victoire en 2013, l’équipe n’a pas pu se qualifier pour la CAN 2015.
L’Algérie et le Cameroun ne font pas exception
L’Algérie a affiché un mauvais visage en 2021 après avoir gagné la CAN 2019. Pourtant, les Fennecs partageaient le groupe E du tournoi avec la Sierra Leone, la Guinée-Équatoriale et la Côte d’Ivoire. Malheureusement, l’Algérie a terminé quatrième de la poule avec 1 point et est éliminée de la CAN 2021. La seule sélection qui a fait mieux après avoir été championne est le Cameroun. Après avoir remporté la CAN 2017, les Lions Indomptables ont atteint les huitièmes de finale avant d’être éliminés. Le Sénégal a des exemples concrets du danger qui les guette à la CAN 2023.
Le Sénégal au mental fort et un effectif rajeunit
Le Sénégal est presque habitué à la pression psychologique. En effet, les Lions de la Teranga ont été comparés pendant longtemps à la Belgique. Ce dernier était la première nation de football, mais sans réussir à remporter de titre majeur. La CAN remportée en 2021 a permis au Sénégal d’avoir une autre histoire, et cela, grâce au mental des joueurs. De surcroît, l’équipe est renforcée par des jeunes talents, qui donneront tout pour réussir cette compétition.
