Alors que la Côte d’Ivoire s’apprête à acceuillir la CAN 2023, les Ivoiriens se remémorent les souvenirs du 3 février 2000. Une date historique pour le football local et l’équipe nationale. De retour d’une CAN 2000 très décevante, les Eléphants ont, en effet, été accueillis au camp militaire de Zambakro. Les joueurs ont été disciplinés et éduqués à la fibre patriotique, comme s’en rappelle Bonaventure Kalou, qui faisait partie de l’équipe nationale ivoirienne à cette époque.
Qualifiée pour la CAN 2000, la Côte d’Ivoire était citée parmi les favoris au sacre final de cette édition qui se déroulait au Ghana. Problème, les Eléphants sont logés dans un groupe assez costaud. Ils étaient aux côtés du Ghana, pays hôte, du Togo et surtout du Cameroun, futur vainqueur de la compétition. Ils portaient les espoirs de tout un peuple, et surtout d’un régime militaire dirigé par le général Gueï, qui venait de prendre le pouvoir après un coup d’Etat orchestré le 24 décembre 1999. Malheureusement, la campagne se passe mal pour les hommes de Martin Tia Gbonké, éliminés dès le premier tour. Et ce en dépit d’une victoire 2-0 remportée contre le Ghana pour finir troisième avec quatre points. Les Eléphants avaient en effet été tenus en échec (1-1) par le Togo avant de sombrer devant le Cameroun 3-0. L’élimination est dure à accepter pour les putschistes, qui décident de préparer une réception surprise pour Bonaventure Kalou, Cyril Domoraud, Alain Gouaméné et compagnie.
Les Eléphants accueillis au camp militaire
Partie d’Accra après leur élimination, la délégation ivoirienne devrait revenir sur Abidjan, mais il n’en sera rien. Changement d’itinéraire, les Eléphants doivent directement atterrir à Yamoussoukro sur ordre de l’homme fort du pays. « On joue notre dernier match contre le Ghana. En Coupe d’Afrique, on est éliminé et il y a le président Gueï qui envoie un avion nous chercher. Moi je devais retourner jouer un match de Champions League, donc on nous dit que le président veut nous voir à Abidjan, donc on prend l’avion et puis on arrive. Et quand l’avion commence à descendre. On voit que c’est pas Abidjan parce qu’à Abidjan c’est plus éclairé, donc on atterrit. Et puis quand on atterrit, on voit une vingtaine de camions de militaires qui viennent nous chercher. Soi-disant il faut qu’on aille dans un camp militaire », témoigne Bonaventure Kalou dans une interview à la RTI.
De la sardine et du pain au dîner
Convoyés au camp militaire de Zambakro, les Eléphants ont été accueillis avec un repas inhabituel. Alain Gouaméné a dû opposer une certaine résistance avant de céder à rejoindre où lui et ses partenaires seront mis à rude épreuve. « Alain Gouaméné, en un bon Bété, pendant 1h, il n’a pas accepté de monter dans le cargo et c’était des discussions. Et finalement les autorités nous ont convaincu d’y aller. Puis on arrive à Zambakro. On est parti du Ghana à 18h00 et à 22h00 on arrive, on avait faim. Et avec du pain et des sardines, les joueurs ont refusé de manger. Avec Dié Serge qui était mon voisin, on a pris 2 pains, on a mangé et on allait en chambre. On revient, il y a plus de pain, il y a plus de sardines, donc on a compris que finalement les autres avaient mangé aussi », poursuit Kalou.
Diabaté Lassina à l’épreuve de la rigueur militaire
Parmi les joueurs, il y avait le milieu de terrain Diabaté Lassina. Avec son passeport français, le joueur de Bordeaux avait pris la décision de quitter le cam, mais il sera tout de suite mis devant la rigueur des militaires. « Diabaté Lassina, il a son passeport français, il veut voir sa famille, donc il prend ses affaires. Et puis il va à la guérite, il veut sortir. Deux caporaux sont là et puis ils disent est ce que depuis que vous êtes là on a touché quelqu’un ? Parce que nous, on l’a suivi un peu pour voir comment il allait faire. Il tourne, il se plaint, ouais, moi je m’en vais, il faut que je rentre. Et les militaires lui ont dit, Bon, si tu es un homme sort. Et puis ils ont soulevé la barrière. Diabaté, il a parlé pendant 5 Min et puis il est retourné poser ses affaires dans la Chambre », raconte Bonaventure Kalou.
Les Eléphants mis au pas à Zambakro
Durant leur séjour au camp militaire, les joueurs de la sélection ivoirienne ont été soumis à un programme d’activités imposé par le régime militaire. Il y avait le lever des couleurs, marche au pas et cours d’instruction civique. L’objectif est de lisser les égos qui empêcheraient les Eléphants de donner leur pleine mesure, et rappeler à ces « enfants gâtés » le poids du drapeau national. Mais entre les joueurs et les militaires, c’était tout de même une bonne coopération au camp de Zambakro. « Les militaires faisaient leur boulot, durement, ils appliquaient les consignes du chef de l’Etat. Mais ce sont aussi des pères de famille. Après les exercices, on a joué au foot, au volley. On a signé des autographes, pris des photos. », a témoigné Ibrahima Bakayoko, évoluant à l’Olympique de Marseille à l’époque, dans une interview au quotidien Libération.
Un remontage de bretelle historique
Avant leur voyage vers leurs différents clubs, les Eléphants ont eu droit à un face à fac tendu avec le général Gueï. D’un ton menaçant, l’homme fort du pays a remontré les bretelles à des joueurs déguisés en soldats en crampons. « J’ai demandé que vous soyez envoyés dans cette caserne pour réfléchir. C’est un premier avertissement, vous avez été indignes. Les pieds et le cœur devaient jouer (…) C’est la dernière fois que vous serez aussi décevants. La prochaine fois, vous resterez pendant la durée de votre service militaire, c’est-à-dire dix-huit mois, et nous allons vous mettre en treillis. (…) A bon entendeur, salut! », a-t-il lâché aux joueurs. Un épisode qui serait resté finalement sans effet, puisque lors de la CAN 2002, la Côte d’Ivoire est encore éliminée dès la phase de groupes.
