Max Alain Gradel est l’un des joueurs dont la présence à la CAN 2023 ne fait l’ombre d’aucun doute dans la tête de Jean-Louis Gasset. L’attaquant ivoirien, du haut de ses 35 piges, est le plus vieux des Eléphants encore présents en équipe nationale. C’est d’ailleurs celui qui compte actuellement le plus grand nombre de participation en phase finale de la CAN parmi les hommes de Gasset.
L’attaquant de Gaziantep évolue avec les Eléphants maintenant depuis douze ans. Plus d’une décennie au cours de laquelle Max Alain Gradel s’est toujours mis au service de l’équipe nationale de Côte d’Ivoire. Aujourd’hui âgé de 35 ans (36 ans le 30 novembre prochain), sa présence est parfois très critiquée par des supporters qui lui réclament un passage de témoin à la jeunesse. Des critiques qui sont loin de perturber un Gradel qui n’a pas l’air d’être affaibli par le poids de l’âge. A l’occasion de la CAN 2023, il s’apprête à disputer sa septième phase finale. Ce qui en fait le plus capé des Ivoiriens attendus en janvier 2024.
CAN 2012 : Une première expérience au goût d’inachevé pour Gradel
Né le 30 novembre 1987, à Abidjan, c’est à l’AS Saint-Etienne que Max Alain Gradel s’est véritablement révélé. Il a rejoint les Verts le 31 août 2011, après une saison aboutie à Leeds en Championship en Angleterre. Quelques mois plus tôt, l’attaquant est convoqué pour la première fois en équipe nationale de Côte d’Ivoire, soit le 27 mars 2011, sous François Zahoui, alors sélectionneur des Eléphants. Mais ce n’est que le 5 juin 2011 que Max Alain Gradel a disputé ses premières minutes en sélection, entrant en cours du jeu, lors d’une victoire 6-2 contre le Bénin à Cotonou. Il obtient après sa place sur la liste des 23 Eléphants de François Zahoui pour la CAN 2012, la première de sa carrière de footballeur professionnel.
A cette édition coorganisée par le Gabon et la Guinée-Equatoriale, Gradel n’avait qu’un rôle de remplaçant. Il était en effet la doublure de Salomon Kalou, dans un effectif riche en joueurs de qualité. Remplaçant lors des deux premières journées de la phase de groupe (26′ contre le Soudan, 25′ contre le Burkina Faso), il est titularisé lors de la dernière journée, pour une victoire 2-0 contre l’Angola, avec 90 minutes disputées. Gradel enchaîne ensuite face à la Guinée-Equatoriale (85 minutes) en quarts de finale avec une victoire 3-0 des Eléphants. Laissé au banc en demi-finales, Max Alain Gradel entre en jeu lors de la finale face à la Zambie avec 56 minutes jouées. Bien qu’il ait réussi son tir lors des tirs au but, la Côte d’Ivoire est battue par les Chipolopolo, champions de la CAN 2012.
CAN 2013 : Une désillusion pour Gradel et les Eléphants
S’il a été très utilisé lors de sa première CAN en 2012, le statut de Max Alain Gradel n’a pas pour autant évolué. Un an après, en Afrique du Sud, l’attaquant est toujours remplacé mais surtout avec en moins de temps de jeu cette fois-ci. En phase de groupes, il n’a disputé que 68 minutes de jeu, ayant été laissé au banc lors de la troisième et dernière journée du premier tour. Revenu en quart de finale face au Nigeria, ses 21 minutes de jeu n’auront pas suffi pour éviter la défaite 1-2 des Ivoiriens. Une élimination précoce et une désillusion pour des Eléphants pourtant vice-champions d’Afrique en titre.
CAN 2015 : La maturité et la gloire pour Max Alain Gradel
Après deux phases finales douloureuses, Max Alain Gradel va enfin connaitre le bonheur avec les Eléphants. Et ce quatre ans après ses débuts en équipe nationale. Longtemps cantonné à un rôle de remplaçant respectivement sous François Zahoui et Sabri Lamouchi, il sera récompensé sous les ordres de Hervé Renard. Il aurait pu pourtant ne pas participer à cette CAN 2015, ayant été déclaré blessé par l’AS Saint-Etienne. Arrivé à maturité et avec un peu plus de responsabilités, Gradel joue un grand rôle dans le sacre des Eléphants. Laissé au banc lors du nul 1-1 face à la Guinée, il revient et marque l’unique but du nul 1-1 contre la Mali avant de marquer le but de la victoire et de la qualification 1-0 contre le Cameroun.
Décisif en quart de finale pour une victoire 3-1 face à l’Algérie, Gradel guide la Côte d’Ivoire en finale après avoir écarté la RD Congo sur ce même score en demi-finale. Les Eléphants finissent par remporter cette CAN 2015 en Guinée-Equatoriale devant le Ghana. Il aura disputé en tout 360 minutes, ne manquant qu’une seule rencontre.
CAN 2017 : Gradel et les Eléphants descendus de leurs nuages
C’est sans doute la participation la plus douloureuse et la plus humiliante de la carrière de Max Alain Gradel en Coupe d’Afrique des Nations. Avec un statut de championne d’Afrique en titre, la Côte d’Ivoire était attendue pour défendre son titre. Les Eléphants se retrouvent dans un groupe à leur portée avec le Togo, la RD Congo et le Maroc. C’est justement le dernier adversaire cité qui met définitivement fin au parcours des Ivoiriens après seulement trois matchs joués. Déjà accrochés par le Togo (0-0) et la RDC (2-2), Gradel et ses coéquipiers sont éliminés après une défaite 1-0 contre les Marocains. Un échec qui symbolise la baisse de régime de Max Gradel qui n’a disputé que 90 minutes en trois matchs, son deuxième mauvais temps de jeu en phase finale d’une Coupe d’Afrique des Nations.
CAN 2019 : Retour en forme de Gradel, les Eléphants vite éliminés
Après la déroute de 2017, Max Alain Gradel et les Eléphants avaient un compte à rendre avec la CAN et surtout le Maroc qu’ils retrouvent à la CAN 2019. L’objectif était clair, reconquérir le titre perdu deux ans plus tôt. Mais c’était sans compter sur une équipe du Maroc prête à remettre le couteau dans la plaie. Titulaire face à l’Afrique du Sud, Gradel offre la passe décisive de l’unique but de la victoire 1-0 des Eléphants. Mais c’est sur ce même score qu’ils vont ensuite s’effondrer une fois encore contre le Maroc en dépit des 55 minutes de jeu de Gradel. Heureusement, la Côte d’Ivoire se reprend face à la Namibie (4-1) avant de s’offrir le Mali en huitièmes de finale pour échouer face à l’Algérie en quarts de finale lors des tirs au but.
CAN 2021 : La désillusion de trop pour Max Alain Gradel
Depuis l’excellent parcours et le sacre en 2015, Max Alain Gradel et les Eléphants peinent à retrouver leur meilleur niveau collectif. Sortis en phase de groupe en 2017 puis éliminés en quarts de finale en 2019, les Ivoiriens n’ont pas pu faire mieux non plus en 2021. Après avoir offert la victoire 1-0 à la Côte d’Ivoire face à la Guinée-Equatoriale (71 minutes), Gradel est resté au banc lors du nul 2-2 contre la Sierra Leone. Titulaire lors de la troisième journée, il dispute 90 minutes et participe à la victoire 3-1 face à l’Algérie avant que les Eléphants ne calent devant l’Egypte en huitièmes de finale malgré les 72 minutes de Gradel, qui se prépare à disputer sa septième phase finale d’une Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, sans doute la dernière de sa carrière internationale avec la Côte d’Ivoire.
